Daily Prayer and Confession

God, You are the Creator of all things.  You created me in Your likeness and image.  You have given me gifts and talents.  There are things that I can do very well.  I have or will discover my calling in life and will perform this calling at a very high level.  I do not fear failure.  When I fall, I get up immediately and get back into the race.  I love and am good to myself.  I eat healthy food, drink at least 8 glasses of water daily, do an exercise program, and get enough rest.  I overcome all of my past hurts and failures.  I forgive myself, and forgive everyone else who has hurt or disappointed me in any way; I am not bound -- to or  because of -- the actions, statements, or demeanor of others.  I refuse to worry about anything.  There is, however, room for growth and improvement in my life and through prayer, faith and hard work, I am a better person. I invest my God given gifts, talents and resources into serving others, with the hope of showing them the love of Christ, and with the desire of assisting them in reaching their goals in life.  I am not jealous or envious of the success of others; in fact, I take great joy in helping them celebrate their accomplishments.  I do so with the full knowledge that as I plant seed (my God-given gifts, talents, abilities and resources) into serving others, I release the blessings of God into my life.  I reap what I sow.  One of the most important things I give to others is the Gospel of Christ.  It is important because this message, if believed, causes people to be saved from sin and eternal separation from God.  I pay tithes, give liberal offerings and spend my money wisely.
I pay my bills on time and I declare that I am debt free.  I am successful in this life, and I use my success to bring glory to God.  With the help of God, I make this world a better place to live in.  I was created for such a time as this!!  This I confess in Jesus name.  Amen and Amen!!!

GLEN's HEALTHFUL MOMENT!

A profound life lesson --

In the end, three things matter:
1.  how much you loved
2.  how gently you lived
3. how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you

GLEN's HEALTHFUL MOMENT!

Bumping Negativity Off the Agenda

THERE IS A PHRASE IN THE COMPUTER profession that says, 'garbage in, garbage out."  It means that if a program is set up poorly and gives erroneous messages to the computer, it will yield only garbled output.  Our minds work on much the same principle.  If we put garbage such as negativity into our minds, our lives will reflect it by being more difficult and less joyful than we wish they were.
If, out of habit, we have been placing negative thinking at the top of our life's agenda, we need to bump it to the very bottom--with the goal of eliminating it altogether.  As we replace negativity with upbeat and optimistic thinking, we create an environment where the seeds of creativity, humor and love can take root.
Math is the only arena where negative times a negative equals a positive.  In the real life of emotions and beliefs, compounded negatives equal only more negatives.  So when we allow our minds to dwell on pessimistic feelings and thoughts, we develop a mental magnet that draws more negativity to us.
We can change that by a simple mental exercise.  On days when you are feeling low, it's important to support yourself by first becoming aware of your negative thoughts, then by consciously placing each one --
one at a time -- on the bottom of your mental agenda.  Finally, put a comforting, affirming thought at the top of your agenda.  Although this exercise may seem phony at first, persevere and you will begin to create a new habit of "positive in, positive out."

GLEN's HEALTHFUL MOMENT!

FORGIVENESS AFFIRMATION

The door to my heart opens inward.  I move through forgiveness to love.  As I change my thoughts, the world around me changes.  The past is over so it has no power now.  The thoughts of this moment create my future.  It is no fun being a victim.  I refuse to be helpless anymore.  I claim my own power.  I give myself the freedom from the past and move with joy into the now.  There is no problem too big or too small that it cannot be solved with love.  I am ready to be healed.  I am willing to forgive and all is well.  I know that all negative patterns no longer limit me.  I let them go with ease.  And as I forgive myself, it becomes easier to forgive others.  I forgive myself for not being perfect.  I am living the best I know how.  It is safe for me to release all my childhood trauma and move into love.  I forgive everyone in my past for all perceived wrongs.  I release them with love.  All the changes that lie before me are positive ones and I am safe..........LOUISE HAY

GLEN's HEALTHFUL MOMENT

Special Question for my Family

I would like for you to ponder, contemplate, think deeply as you ask yourself this question.

Who am I?

Nope -- has nothing to do with your job.  That is simply a 'means to an end'.  Has nothing to do with where you live or what title you hold as a mother, father, son, daughter, etc. -- none of that!!!  In fact, picture yourself on a deserted island -- alone -- and contemplate the answer to this question.  What are your aspirations?  What one thing makes you happy right away?  What other things make you happy?  What do feel you were placed here to do?  What are your gifts, talents, skills and abilities?.....etc.  Take days or a week or so to really answer this question.  It has to do with NOONE ELSE -- just you.

GLEN's HEALTHFUL MOMENT!

Editing Out Guilt

WOMEN ARE OFTEN PLAGUED BY FEELINGS of guilt, but I learned an interesting thing recently: guilt is a strictly English word.  No other Germanic or Indo-European language has it.  We need to follow the lead of these other cultures and edit the word guilt--and guilt feelings--out of our lives.
Feeling guilty drains our confidence and becomes a habit if we have been conditioned to be overly responsible for our own and others' behaviors and attitudes.  Millie, a client in her mid-fifties, came to see me because she felt depressed most of the time.  As we talked, it became apparent that Millie was a Responsibility Sponge who sopped up everyone's messes.  While discussing her unemployed thirty-year-old son, Millie sighed repeatedly and finally said, "I wonder where I failed?"  When I asked her why it was her fault her son was not working, she looked at me with surprise and said, "Well, because I'm his mother."
Exploring Millie's background uncovered a family structure built on guilt and shame.  Because of her conditioning, Millie got in the habit of assuming responsibility for everything and everyone around her.  Since she, like the rest of us, had no real power over anyone's actions but her own, she felt discouraged and depressed.  Millie decided to edit guilt out of her life using the following technique.
When you begin to experience guilt, ask yourself these questions:  What have I really done to feel guilty about?  (If there is something specific, decide whether you can rectify it, and if so, how?)  Why am I responsible for this?  Does this feeling and circumstance remind me of a pattern in my family?  Do I want to keep feeling guilty about this?
If the answer to the last question is no, take a sheet of paper and write down what you feel guilty about.  Now, with the biggest, reddest marker you can find, cross it out--delete it.  If you find yourself still mired in guilt, remind yourself:  Guilt is a word and feeling I am editing out of my life!

GLEN'S HEALTHFUL MOMENT!

Leaving Shame and Guilt Behind

THE PERSON WE MOST OFTEN STAIN with feelings of shame and guilt is ourself, and much of our guilt and shame comes from believing we have failed in some way or other.  Maybe we "should" have been more successful or "shouldn't" have had an abortion, or "should" have been able to stop his drinking.  Some of us can go on forever "should-ing" ourselves.
Mary Pickford, the actress, had a bit of insight on this subject I think we would be wise to adopt.  "If you have made mistakes......there is always another chance for you.....  You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call 'failure' is not the falling down, but the staying down."  Very few of us stay down for long.
Sadie and Ashley, mother and daughter, were talking about their past.  Ashley told her mom that she would tell her more about what she was struggling with but didn't want Sadie to feel guilty.  Sadie wisely, and with hard-earned self-love, said, "I'm over that.  I see we were in the same circumstances, but I didn't cause them.  If I'd had the power or the awareness, I would have changed the situation.  I didn't have either and I did the best I could."  Don't we all!
Make a list of your seeming failures--the "shoulds" you think you need to feel shameful and guilty about.  Ask yourself if you did the best you knew how at the time; if so, think of a symbolic way to release these feelings.  For instance, a friend of mine gave me a jar labeled "Shoulds and Oughts".  Periodically, I take out the little scraps of paper on which I have put my shame and guilt and burn them as a symbol of letting go and moving on.
Yesterday is irretrievable and tomorrow is unknown.  We have done the best we could, and now it's time for us to forgive ourselves for our seeming failures, congratulate ourselves for getting up after falling down, and then leave remorse behind us.

GLEN's HEALTHFUL MOMENT!

Developing Healthy Selfishness

The FEAR OF APPEARING (OH, HORRORS!) selfish can lead us to give ourselves away until we are exhausted and drained absolutely dry.  A dry well has nothing to offer to others.  Cultivating selfishness can be a virtue that activates an ever-flowing spring of goodness from which we can share liberally with others.
It really is true that we do unto others as we do unto ourselves.  Those who first love themselves are able to love others more genuinely.  As we honor our own wants and needs, we can do the same for others.  Those who truly love themselves--as opposed to being self-centered or self-absorbed--can trust, accept and support others from a place of I give freelyrather than I need, therefore I give in hope of some return.
Sit quietly and tune in to your breathing.  Allow it to move as it will.  After watching your breath for a few moments, encourage it to deepen.  Take in new air to an accepting universe.  See yourself, symbolically, as a vase--a vessel for sacred water.  How full are you?  If you are full to overflowing, you have much to offer the world.  If you are less than full, your task is to selfishly fill your vessel.  As you inhale, see your vase filling with crystalline water; as you exhale, let go of your old ideas about being selfish.  Breathe and fill.  Breathe and release.
Make a list of the things you would like to do for yourself but haven't because you thought it would be too selfish.  If you do these things, will your life be richer?  Will you be happier?  Will you have more peace of mind?  Will you be able to let go of some resentment?  Will you feel more supportive of yourself?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, your life and your relationships will benefit from the infusion of a little selfishness.  So give yourself permission to be selfish!

GLEN's HEALTHFUL MOMENT!

   "Knitting the Raveled Sleeve"
SLEEPas Shakespeare said, KNITS UP the raveled sleeve of care.  And who among us does not go to bed some nights with substantially raveled sleeves?  We need our sleep because it replenishes all of our resources -- emotional, physical, mental and spiritual.
But just as an anorexic deprives her body of food, we sometimes starve ourselves of rest by attempting to sleep in an environment where we are overpowered by our partner's cover stealing, restlessness or snoring.
Diane struggled out of bed each morning bleary-eyed and resentful, having spent yet another night unsuccessfully trying to block out the sound of her husband's snoring.  By the time morning arrived, her nerves were frayed, her creativity dwindled and her disposition soured.  She almost hated him -- the unwitting instrument of her torturous sleeplessness.  When talking to Diane about her dilemma, I encouraged her to support herself by finding a comfortable place where she could sleep peacefully.  With some guilt and trepidation, she mustered the courage to move into another bedroom.
Just recently she told me that the move had saved her marriage.  Watching Diane and her husband affectionately holding hands and laughing with one another, I could see the new relationship they had forged out of her willingness to take care of herself.
If our sleep vibrations do not mix and match well with our bed partner, this may sometimes mean we need a bedroom of our own.  The sleep-on-the-couch cliche does not have to be a derogatory comment on the state of our relationship; rather it can mean that we have supported ourselves by creating a comfortable sanctuary, a feminine haven where we can get our much needed rest and knit up our raveled sleeve of care, undisturbed.
Sleeping well during the night means we are more likely to have an accepting and supportive attitude toward the people we meet during the day.

Mother's Day: A Celebration of Health Activism!

[Photo] Ann Reeves, the health activist who inspired Mother's Day A lot of people suspect Mother's Day is really just a holiday invented to sell flowers, cards and candy. The truth, however, is far more interesting, especially for those of us with a passion for health.

Mother's Day was actually established by a woman named Anna Jarvis, in honor of her own mother, Ann Marie Reeves. Ann Reeves was propelled by personal tragedy to become  a crusader for public health.

Ann Reeves organized a number of Mother's Day Work Clubs, which brought together women in their community to work together for the public good, helping other mothers in rural Appalachia to care for their families by educating them about nutrition and sanitation.

A Difficult Place

Our Daily Bread Radio is hosted by Les Lamborn

When a sudden change in technology made his job obsolete, a highly trained scientist found himself working in a fast-food restaurant. One evening after our Bible study he described the situation as difficult and humbling. He said, “One good thing I can say is that the young people there seem very interested in my faith.” A member of the group responded, “I admire you for being humble. I know your faith must have something to do with it.”
Like my acquaintance, Philip may have wondered why God would pull him off an assignment in Samaria (Acts 8:4-8) and plop him in the middle of the desert (v.26). But then he found that the Ethiopian needed help understanding the Scriptures (vv.27-35), and his place made sense.
When Jesus promised He would never leave us alone (Matt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5), He meant in the hard times as well as in the good times. Our mission in the difficult seasons of life is to work or serve remembering we are doing it for God, and then to watch as God works to accomplish His purposes.
Look for God in your difficult place and discover what He’s doing in and through you there.
Disappointment—His appointment,
No good thing will He withhold;
From denials oft we gather
Treasures of His love untold. —Young
What’s better than answers to our why questions? Trusting a good God who has His reasons.

Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can never get it back.
